Question
What is the ruling regarding dancing in Islām?
Answer
With regard to your query, please consider the following:
1. Dancing in itself is not forbidden, nor is it disliked, as it consists merely of bodily movements. Anas رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ relates: “The Abyssinians used to dance in the presence of the Messenger of Allahﷺ, saying: ‘Muḥammad is a righteous servant.’ The Messenger of Allahﷺ asked: ‘What are they saying?’ They replied: ‘They are saying: Muḥammad is a righteous servant.’”
2. Notwithstanding this, our jurists have stipulated certain conditions for the permissibility of dancing. It would therefore be impermissible to dance when any of the following conditions are absent:
a) Dancing must be free from swaying, languid movements, or movements resembling those of a mukhannath.
b) It must not involve musical instruments that are impermissible, nor songs containing immoral or impermissible content.
c) It should not cause a person to neglect the remembrance of Allah, such as missing Ṣalāh.
d) It must not resemble the dancing of immoral or sinful people (fussāq).
e) The ʿawrah must remain properly covered at all times except when in a setting containing only one's spouse or Maḥārim(unmarriageable kin), where an appropriate amount of ʿawrah can be uncovered.
f) Dancing must not lead to any other sin or impermissible conduct.
3. For women: An additional condition is that a woman may not dance in the presence of non-maḥram men.
